Pronounced my shahada

Yesterday I said the shahada out loud for the first time with my husband. I might have whispered it while alone before, but never in full voice, and never with anyone. I've been considering myself Muslim for a couple weeks now, but it's a step towards considering myself Muslim in a more official way. We were both just lying together in bed and it was said there. It was a really cute moment and he was touched.

It was in part a birthday present from me to say it out loud for the first time with him, even if he knows I've been considering myself Muslim. To me, yesterday will be the date I will think of as my conversion date because the rest was just so gradual I could never put a date on it. I like that it's on my husband's birthday. I'm happy to now be able to feel like I can say I'm Muslim instead of saying that I'm Muslim in an unofficial way. I know this doesn't make it more "official" than just feeling like I am Muslim, but to me, saying it out loud and having another Muslim hear it is what I needed!

So I'm happy to say that I am Muslim :)

MashaAllah Congratulations sis!!!!

I'm really happy for you! When you get to consider yourself "official" it definitely feels more comfortable. At least it did for me!
I had been praying and dressing more modest and reading so much that I really felt Muslim before I said my shahadah too.

Anyway, once again congrats and I'm really happy for you!!

Mabrook! Its nice that you shared that moment with your husband too. I think that its best that you share the same faith with your daughter and husband. I hope that you keep learning and studying and that your first Ramadan is a blessing for you!

alhamdullilah! I remember when i took my shahadah i was so excited that the night before i could barely sleep. My advice to you would be to take it slow and not let the beauty of islam be destroyed by cultural muslims. we are in a period where islam has become a stranger. our prophet prophesized about this and how islam would once again turn to something strange.

Thanks everyone :)

Stacy, you're right, it helps things be less complicated. Even if I wasn't against Islam and I didn't practice any other religion, I could never have the respect I should have in the things I said. Hopefully that's one thing that will change in my family.

TfK, good advice. I am seeing Islam more clearly these days, but these cultural Muslims are still managing to make it hard for me to want to practice well. It's difficult, but at least I know what I need to know.

I would like to second this advice and also suggest finding out about a mosque in your area that has a large number of converts, or one that offers quran classes for Adult beginners

Candice said...

Thanks, Sruggling. That's good advice. I am actually going to check into the Sunday women classes they have at the mosque, btu I have a feeling it's mostly Moroccan women. I know there are a few converts though and one of my friends is one so I might have to ask her to attend with me :p

So glad to see you! I thought of you the other day when I was thinking over my journey towards Islam. And then just now after I got the comment from the other Aalia/Aalya and I was wondering where you'd gone to!
